Screen, mesh and micro-mesh
Open screens can be easy to inspect and may keep larger leaves out, but smaller debris can pass through or settle on top. Mesh and micro-mesh use smaller openings, which may reduce entry of selected debris while creating more surface-maintenance and water-entry questions. Fine roof grit can load a surface even when the gutter below looks clean.
Ask how the category handles:
- pine needles, seed pods, leaves and roof grit;
- concentrated water at valleys and steep roof sections;
- cleaning access and surface removal;
- corners, end caps and outlets; and
- attachment to the roof edge and existing gutter.
Solid-surface and reverse-curve covers
Solid-surface or reverse-curve designs attempt to guide water around a shaped edge while shedding larger debris. Their performance depends on roof pitch, rainfall intensity, surface tension, debris, installation angle and the condition of the gutter below. A demonstration on a short, clean section is not proof of full-roof behavior.
Before selecting this category, ask how water enters at valleys, what happens when the surface loads with debris, how the product is cleaned, and whether the attachment affects shingles, drip edge or roof documentation.
Brush and foam inserts
Brush and foam products occupy space within the gutter rather than covering it with a separate surface. They may be easier to retrofit in some situations, but wet leaves, roof grit and fine material can remain in or on the insert. Deterioration, removal, insects, outlet access and maintenance should be part of the comparison.

Existing gutter condition comes first
No guard type corrects a gutter that:
- holds standing water or has poor slope;
- pulls away or has loose hangers;
- has open joints, corrosion or damaged end caps;
- repeatedly overflows at a valley;
- has restricted outlets or downspouts; or
- attaches to deteriorated fascia or a roof edge needing separate work.

Heavy rain, roof edges and maintenance
A guard can reduce selected debris but can also change how water enters the trough during intense rain.
